Santa Barbara School Project

Under the direction of David Pettitt, M.D., Sansum Diabetes Research Institute has conducted several outreach programs to local high schools. In addition to the Identifying Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Santa Barbara Area Youth Study (see Current Research main page), SDRI staff have conducted a Health Advocacy program on campus, a Wellness Program for high school students at the Institute, and have worked actively with the Santa Barbara School District to develop a School Wellness Policy.

These programs have been generously funded by the Santa Barbara Foundation, Andrew H. Burnett Foundation, Lilly Centre for Women's Health, Venoco, Inc., and a mini-grant from the Gold Coast Collaborative for Health and Fitness. Students interested in adopting a healthier lifestyle learn about good nutrition, have opportunities for healthy exercise, and support each other through group activities. They participate in local health fairs that allow them to promote healthy eating and exercise to their peers. They have also become spokespersons on their campuses for improving food choices in the cafeterias, vending machines, and at on-campus snack bars.

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute was one of the founding members of the Partners for Fit Youth coalition, which works actively throughout Santa Barbara County to improve the health of young people, addressing obesity in youth in particular. Partners for Fit Youth is currently developing an educational campaign focusing on 'Portion Size'.
