Clinical Trials: Studies in Progress

Clinical trials conducted at Sansum Diabetes Research Institute include programs that address diabetes prevention, gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, new insulin formulations, new insulin delivery systems, and continuous glucose monitoring.

Our scientists are currently working with researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara and other diabetes research centers throughout the US and the world on the progression of the Artificial Pancreas Project. The ultimate goal is a system that will link an insulin pump with a continuous blood glucose sensor to deliver the precise amount of insulin required to closely replicate a healthy pancreas. This project is funded from several sources including the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Ongoing trials are investigating the safety and efficacy of inhaled insulin in the treatment of diabetes. This new delivery system allows the insulin to be quickly absorbed into the blood stream and begin working immediately. Rapid absorption of the inhaled insulin is especially helpful around mealtime by improving glycemic control.

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is the first research site to investigate a new intravascular fluorescent glucose sensor designed for use in intensive care units.  Preliminary studies indicating good accuracy are very promising.

Research related to diabetes prevention is part of a multicenter national study looking at genetic markers in family members of people with type 1 diabetes to see if they can predict which family members have a high risk of developing diabetes. All of the data is collected in a national database to be used in future diabetes prevention studies.

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is conducting a number of studies in pregnant women with diabetes. Click here for information about ongoing studies related to diabetes and pregnancy.

Sansum Research always has new studies in development and needs volunteers to help with research.
