Our clinical trials department, currently located on the second floor of the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute, is currently involved in approximately 15 clinical trials. These trials can be subdivided into several main categories: diabetes prevention, gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, new insulin formulations, new insulin delivery systems and continuous glucose monitoring. Our research related to diabetes prevention is part of a multicenter national study looking at genetic markers in family members of people with type 1 diabetes to see if they can predict which of the family members have a high risk of developing diabetes. All of the data is collected in a national database to be used in future diabetes prevention studies.
We currently have studies under way or in the planning stages to study inhaled insulin, implantable insulin pumps as well as new formulations of insulin. We are currently working with researchers at UCSB on mathematical modeling for an artificial pancreas based on our clinical data. An area of research that is very promising involves using glucose sensors, which give the patient continuous readings. Instead of 5-10 glucose readings per day, we get over 200 readings. In addition to receiving a level of glucose, we also get the direction that the glucose level is heading.
We always have new studies in development. We are also always looking for patients to help us with our research. If you would like to be in our database of patients or if you have any questions feel free to contact the clinical trials department at 805-682-7640.
