Attending Physician for Diabetes and Pregnancy Clinic, Santa Barbara County Health Services
Dr. Jovanovič teaches internal medicine residents from Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital when they attend a one-month rotation through the Diabetes and Pregnancy Clinic. She conducts a didactic component that is based on Up-to-Date as well as teaching the residents to calculate insulin, explain the diabetes diet, interpret laboratory findings, and provide state-of-the-art care to pregnant women with diabetes.
Endocrinology Fellow Rotation
Dr. Jovanovič mentors endocrine fellows from the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine who come to SDRI for training in diabetes and pregnancy.
Endocrinology Journal Club
A bimonthly Endocrine Journal Club was established in 2009, and is coordinated by Dr. Castorino. Physicians and healthcare providers from the region are invited to attend this evening session in which 3-5 journal articles are reviewed and discussed. One hour of Category I CME credits are offered through the Santa Barbara Consortium for CME.
Physician Inservice Training
Dr. Jovanovič has conducted evening seminars approximately quarterly for area physicians who treat patients with diabetes in their practices, particularly those who participate in the Santa Barbara Diabetes Initiative. She developed a Santa Barbara Diabetes Initiative Roadmap for Diabetes Care.
Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine Training Awards
For the last three years, all recipients of the prestigious SEBM award to work with any physician in the world for one month have chosen Dr. Jovanovič and SDRI. They were Anita Banerjee, M.D., endocrine fellow from London, Rachel Pessah, M.D., Senior Resident from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, and Erica Straumeister, M.D., endocrine fellow from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Endocrine University Hagedorn Endowed Chair Lecture
Dr. Jovanovič conducts the half-day session on pancreatic function each year at Endocrine University conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Diabetes Academy
In 2007 and 2008, SDRI hosted a 1½ day Diabetes Academy designed to review recent advances in diabetes treatment, including progress toward developing the artificial pancreas. The academies attracted about 20 participants each and received excellent evaluations. Up to 10.5 hours of Category I CME credits were offered through the Santa Barbara Consortium for CME.
Dietetic Internship Rotation
Students preparing to become registered dietitians at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo rotate through SDRI during their practical training. Working under Jenifer Gaffaney, MS, RD, CDE, they attend the diabetes and pregnancy clinic at Santa Barbara County Health Services, Santa Barbara Diabetes Initiative classes and one-on-one sessions, teach a nutrition class, and conduct an independent project.
Summer Student Internship Program
SDRI has conducted a summer internship program almost every summer for the last twenty years. Upper division undergraduates who are interested in a career in medicine or a related field come to SDRI for 6-10 weeks to work with senior investigators, attend a series of integrated lectures, actively participate in weekly journal clubs, and rotate through local physicians’ offices and hospital departments. The internship program is directed by Trustee Sandra Svoboda.
Inauguration of the Diabetes Center in Tel Aviv, Israel
In December 2009, Dr. Jovanovič was honored at the inauguration of a Center of Excellence for diabetes for her role in advising the Israeli Diabetes Association and training staff in the five year period of planning and implementation.
