Today, May 31st, marks the 95th Anniversary of insulin first being successfully made and administered to a patient in the United States by Dr. William Sansum right here in Santa Barbara. The event is honored in our healing garden at William Sansum Diabetes Center.
The memorial in our healing garden reads, "
Not far from here, in the Potter Metabolic Clinic Wing of the Cottage Hospital, Insulin was first produced in the United States in April 1922 and successfully administered to a diabetic patient May 31, 1922. By William D. Sansum, M.D.,Medical Director And Norman R. Blatherwick, PH.D., Chief Chemist."
